Future of Fashion

As I watched Iris van Herpen's Couture show, I was awestruck by the outfits that seemed to move with the models on the runway.
It's rare to see designers incorporate such elaborate mechanisms into their designs, but it's not the first time we've seen fashion push boundaries. Alexander McQueen's 2006 hologram of Kate Moss accompanied by classical music was a monumental moment, but adding physics to fashion is something else entirely.
Iris van Herpen's pieces resemble deep-sea creatures, bordering on the alien in some respects. Evolution often produces complexity that eventually cycles back to simplicity, as seen in the longevity of some underwater creatures like nautiluses, which originated 500 million years ago. In contrast, their extinct relative ammonites may have become too complex. Metaphorically, if deep-sea creatures represent the past, could alien-like forms signify the future? If we subscribe to the circular theory of time, could the past and future converge in the upcoming immersive economy of the Metaverse?

In some older video games, players can purchase movements for their characters, also known as avatars today. I remember working hard to get a particular accessory for my character because outfits were usually pre-set, and I wanted a unique combination. You can call me a nerd, but I see it as a pursuit of individual expression.
Returning to fashion, I know this may seem like a stretch, but that's why you're here: to hear my far-reaching predictions. Since fashion didn't originate in the digital world, it has no history there. However, as brands establish new identities in the Metaverse and develop digital twins of their products, these garment forms will be observed in the digital world, just as they already exist in the physical one.
